Kelly Clarkson – 7th Studio Album

Kelly Clarkson Live Soulful Atlantic Records

Ever since Kelly Clarkson released her 6th studio album, Piece By Piece, in March 2015, she’s been excited about the next chapter. Piece By Piece was the final album in the RCA contact she’d had since 2002, and Kelly had longed for more creative freedom. In June 2016, Kelly announced her move to Atlantic Records and her plan to make a soulful album! The album will be out sometime in 2017.

Kelly has a few other projects on the side as well. She’ll be releasing her first children’s book – River Rose And The Magical Lullaby – this October along with a recorded lullaby. Kelly promises a book tour too, so be ready for that! She has also reportedly recorded the soundtrack song for a movie called The Secret Scripture, expected out in 2017. This December Kelly will host her second charity concert, Miracle On Broadway; more details will be announced in the coming months. Kelly has plenty going on, and it will be exciting to hear her new soul album next year!

Piece By Piece and Planning a Country – or R&B – Album

Even as Kelly was releasing her 6th studio album, Piece By Piece, in March 2015, she was already talking about future albums. In multiple interviews she said that she had a full country album on the back burner ready to go. (She had been planning to release one since 2013 when she put out the single “Tie It Up.”) But Kelly is an artist of many genres, and she also mentioned her desire to release an R&B album in a number of 2015 interviews.

6-Album RCA Contract Fulfilled

Back in 2002, when Kelly Clarkson was crowned the first winner of American Idol, she was awarded a 6-album contract with RCA. That’s a rather long contract by today’s standards, but back then it was still the norm. Thirteen years later, Kelly had finally fulfilled her contract with the release of Piece By Piece. It was her 6th full length album with RCA, not counting her 2012 greatest hits compilation and her 2013 holiday album, Wrapped In Red. (Neither of those fulfilled the contract requirements – albums generally have to be more than 50% original, previously unreleased material to count towards a recording contract).

For years Kelly had been excited about her RCA contract to be completed. Her main issue with RCA was creative freedom. She had very little say in her first album, Thankful, and had to fight to get Breakaway how she wanted it. Her third album, 2007’s My December, is where things really became rocky for her and RCA. She had co-written all her songs, going in a somewhat darker, more rock direction. She barely won the battle to get My December released, but wasn’t granted adequate promotion. 2009’s All I Ever Wanted returned her to the pop sound, but she wasn’t happy. Kelly made it clear that she was looking forward to her contract’s end.

Although her next two albums – Stronger and Piece By Piece – went more smoothly, Kelly still craved creative control and the freedom to record the music she wanted.

As of 2015, Kelly’s contract with RCA was over. Although she’d had good relations with the label over the last two albums, keep in mind that she had a tough relationship with them for years prior to that. If Kelly was going to re-sign with RCA, they would have to give her a better end of the deal.

Album Plans & a Soundtrack Song

On December 2, 2015, Kelly did a twitter takeover of Cricket Wireless’s account and answered fans’ varied questions. During it all, Kelly revealed some interesting tidbits of info about her next album. Apparently she was hoping to release a new album in 2016:

On January 30, 2016, Kelly’s keyboardist and producer, Jason Halbert, posted an exciting picture on Twitter showing a recording in progress. It says “KC VOCAL: Comp B,” indicating that it is Kelly’s vocal takes we see; it shows the verse and first chorus of the song. The question is: What song is this? Is it for Kelly’s next album? Or is it for some other project?

A few weeks later, composer Brian Byrne confirmed that Kelly had recorded the soundtrack song for an upcoming film called The Secret Scripture. The song will evidently share the same title.

The movie is still in the process of securing a distributor. It is not known when the film will be released. Kelly’s song will not be available until the movie has a release date.

Kelly Announces Children’s Book

On February 9th, Kelly shared some big news she’d been teasing all week: She can now add “author” to her list of accomplishments, because she has a new children’s book coming out! Her book, River Rose And The Magical Lullaby, was inspired by her 20-month-old daughter and will be out this October.

Kelly announced the news with River in an adorable video:

River Rose And The Magical Lullaby will be published by HarperCollins Children’s Books. As Kelly said in a press release“When kids read River Rose And The Magical Lullaby my hope is that it inspires their imagination and reminds them that they should always follow their dreams – no matter where they lead.”

Those of you hoping for new music will be excited to know that the release of the book also comes with a brand new lullaby written and performed by Kelly. Amazon included some of its lyrics:

River Rose landed down in the center of the zoo.
And right around the corner came a bouncy kangaroo.
He was just about to ask if there was something he could do,
when River Rose jumped up and said, “We’ve come to play with you!”

You can pre-order River Rose And The Magical Lullaby on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other retailers now. It will be out on October 4, 2016.

Baby #2 Is Born!

Back in August 2015, Kelly had announced she was pregnant with her second child. She later confirmed it would be a boy. On April 12, 2016, little Remington was finally born! Kelly shared some photos of him shortly after:

Kelly Signs With Atlantic Records & Announces Soul Album

Starting June 20th, Kelly was been teasing a big announcement, keeping excitement high with a series of Facebook live streams. Each day Kelly covered a different song and answered some fan questions, all while trying her best not to accidentally reveal the big news. But some smart fans figured it out anyway!

On Friday, June 24th, Kelly revealed the news: After releasing 6 albums (plus a greatest hits compilation and holiday record), Kelly was leaving her label, RCA. Kelly has now signed with Atlantic Records, where she’ll have more of the creative freedom she’s craved over the years.

Kelly’s first album with Atlantic will be something she’s wanted to do since she was young: A soulful record. After covering songs by the likes of Aretha Franklin and Ben E. King, it’s no surprise that Kelly wants to really delve into a genre that her voice was made for. Kelly confirmed that her soulful album should be out some time in 2017.

Kelly explained her decision to move to Atlantic:

They love every part of my personality as far as, like, all my colors. I love the country side of me, and I love the Broadway side of me, and I love the pop side of me, and the soulful side of me, and they are down to make really whatever record I’m into, which is real rare, so I’m super-excited about it.

Warner Music Group (of which Atlantic Records is a part) published a full press release announcing Kelly’s label switch. Read an excerpt of it below:

“We are thrilled to welcome Kelly Clarkson into the Atlantic family,” said Atlantic Chairman/CEO Craig Kallman and Atlantic Chairman/COO Julie Greenwald. “She is one of the greatest artists of our generation, a musical icon with an extraordinary, soul-inspired voice that has captivated millions of fans around the world. We are honored to be partnering with Kelly as she embarks on this exciting new phase of her record-breaking career.”

“After winning American Idol there was an arranged marriage that occurred that sometimes worked out and sometimes resulted in the hardest experiences of my life,” commented Kelly Clarkson. “As an artist, American Idol gave me something that was incredible, an audience and a platform before even releasing music. Although I am extremely thankful to the amazing people that I’ve had the chance to work with, I cannot describe the excitement of working with Julie Greenwald, Craig Kallman, and their team at Atlantic Records. The loyalty, innovation, and creativeness that Atlantic Records has been consistently bringing to the music industry is incredibly exciting for any artist to be a part of! We have already started creating a record that I have been wanting to make since I was a little girl, and a record that fans have been asking me to make for years. Here’s to the future!”

That wasn’t the only Kelly news on June 24th! In line with all the fan requests she’s been singing on Facebook this week, Kelly also announced a new website where fans can stream and download the songs she has covered on tour. KellyClarksonLive.com went live today, and it includes 4 songs that you can stream or download for free: “Creep” by Radiohead, “Fix You” by Coldplay, “I’d Rather Go Blind” by Etta James, and “Ready For Love” by India.Arie. On the last Friday of every month, Kelly’s team will add more songs and videos to the site for fans to stream, download, and enjoy. Studio Updates: July 2016

Around the middle of July, Kelly started sharing a bit about her progress in the studio. She confirmed that her upcoming album would be soul pop, and that it will be out in 2017. She’s working with Jason Halbert, but hasn’t written many of the songs yet.

On July 29th, Kelly did a Facebook livestream to announce her new songs on KellyClarksonLive.com and to do an impromptu performance of some her own songs… though she had trouble remember the lyrics! Afterwards, she answered some fans’ questions about the upcoming music on Facebook, revealing that she’s aiming for a spring 2017 release, has written at least two of the new songs, and that she’s thinking about possible collaborations.

Kelly Clarkson is very excited to be able to make a soul pop album. It’s been a dream of hers – and her mom’s – for years, and it will be exciting to hear an album as Kelly wants it. Atlantic Records is a great label, and it will be great to see how they work with Kelly and let her have creative freedom with her music.

Although she only just gave birth to her son in April, Kelly is already actively working on her new album. She plans to release it in spring 2017. Keep checking back here for all the latest Kelly Clarkson music news.
