We knew we were getting a new Green Day single today, but there’s tons more! This morning right at 7:00 am PST, radios nationwide premiered Green Day’s brand new single, “Bang Bang.” Early reviews compared the song to Dookie and Insomniac, but that’s only half the story. “Bang Bang” has the raw energy and aggression of Green Day’s earlier music, but it’s mixed with the wisdom and complexity of their more recent efforts. Listen and you’ll hear elements of the trilogy’s hardest songs and American Idiot.
Many fans thought the single’s title evoked a political topic, and they were right. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told Rolling Stone about the inspiration behind “Bang Bang”:
It’s about the culture of mass shooting that happens in America mixed with narcissistic social media. There’s this sort of rage happening, but it’s also now being filmed and we all have ourselves under surveillance. To me, that is so twisted. To get into the brain of someone like that was freaky. It freaked me out. After I wrote it, all I wanted to do was get that out of my brain because it just freaked me out.

“Bang Bang” was the first song Billie wrote for the new album. You can see its lyric video below:
But the new single isn’t the only Green Day news today! The band also officially announced their upcoming album, Revolution Radio, will be out October 7th. It’s their 12th studio album and the first since their ill-fated trilogy four years ago. Green Day produced the album – their first attempt since Warning in 2000 without Rob Cavallo or Butch Vig.
